(Great name for this character – he definitely is bombastic! ) The father’s reaction to Master’s and his son is one of scorn, and he points out that Master’s isn’t neither an expert in dealing with the baby’s condition and isn’t “top dog” at the hospital. (The case reminds me of the Pulitzer Prize- winning novel Middlesex – which, if you haven’t read, I’d highly recommend.) Chromosome testing shows it’s a boy and Masters insists to the angry father, Nate Bombeck ( Josh Randall), that once the baby has developed more surgery can be performed to fix the genitals.
The child is born with a rare condition where the infant has signs of both male and female genitalia. The medical case involves the birth of a baby delivered by Masters. This charming opening foreshadows all the questions being asked in “Fight.” Is there really only one kind of prince – and does the princess always know who he is? Tessa says yes, even if he’s been “horribly disfigured” the princess will recognize him – and her kiss will turn him back into the handsome prince. Eventually, Tessa gives up, noting that her daughter loves these tales because she likes knowing how things are going to end. There’s only one kind of prince – the handsome prince.Īlthough she tries to get Tessa to deviate from the rules of fairy tales, Tessa is firmly entrenched with the idea of princes, princesses, and happily ever after. Virginia’s devil’s advocate question, “is there a tooth fairy prince” is met with a very matter-of-fact answer: Daughter Tessa ( Kayla Madison), concerned that her loose tooth will come out while staying overnight with her father, is writing a note to the “tooth fairy princess” – so that the fairy knows where to come get it. (I wonder if he realizes it probably wasn’t meant as a compliment?). Her son Henry is upstairs trying to part his hair to look like Howdy Doody – because a girl says Henry looks like him. The episode opens with Virginia getting her kids sent off to school. This is done through the lens of the medical case the’s dealing with, and in his evening with Virginia. This week sees him having to wrestle with his whole identity as a man. Last week we saw his role as a doctor being challenged as he dealt with prejudices and expectations society had/has for women. As the new guy, Masters no longer yields the kind of power he had at the University facilities. Masters is again facing issues involving his status at the new hospital. It has all the hallmarks of this series: painful intensity, raw intimacy and even moments of playful humor.ĭr. Being that their scenes are already filled with complex emotions and the medical cases deal with extreme situations involving sexuality and gender identity the entire episode is riveting. Instead, the scenes from various storylines are presented to highlight ideas and prejudices regarding sex and gender, as well as echoing thoughts and emotions Masters and Johnson experience throughout their evening. The events of this episode aren’t shown linearly.
